Supplies – $50 per 25 lb bag of clay, includes glazes (underglazes, brush on and dipping) and kiln firings Basic tools are available for use while in the studio Please bring your own towel and apron.

Description:

This class is taught by Instructor Jon Salazar serves as an introduction to wheel thrown ceramics and is designed for students with no prior experience or for students who would like are fresher on the fundamentals. Students will learn the steps and processes to successfully
throw on the potter’s wheel and create functional and decorative wares. This includes clay preparation/wedging, proper posture and wheel function, centering, throwing basic cylinder/bowl forms, trimming, pulling and attaching handles, and basic glazing techniques. By the end of the course students should have a basic understanding of wheel thrown pottery fundamentals and with practice be able to produce simple forms and shapes.
All tools needed are provided, however you are more than welcome to bring your own tools if you like. Be sure to dress comfortably in clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy and prepare to have some creative fun.

Originally from San Diego, CA, Jon discovered his love of clay when he moved to Florida in 1998 and took a ceramics class while attending Seabreeze High School. He continued his ceramic education at Daytona State College taking wheel, hand-building, and raku classes. He went on to apprentice under Jennifer Kerr-Marsch of Mosquito Mud Pottery in New Smyrna Beach, learning to make functional production wares. Jon became the studio manager and wheel instructor at Mud Monkey PYOP studio and then Whim Wham Pottery and Art Studio where he shared his passion for clay, teaching both adult and kids classes. When he’s not working, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and their two dogs.  He resides in Ormond Beach.
