For this class I will give hands-on demos and explanations of the principles of composition, like:
-what to include from your scene/reference photo
-what to edit out or move around, and why
-how to correctly distribute your darks and lights for maximum impact
-how to compose the scene on your canvas/paper
-where to place your elements

show the ins and outs of perspective
and how to incorporate people in your scene, at the correct size!

I will do all demos on projects from you, the students. The more ideas and reference photos you bring, the better. We will also go outside for one or two sessions and explore the perspective and composition on site (daytime classes only).
I illustrate these principles on YOUR projects and on as many of them as possible, so you get a lot of samples and ideas. We will have time to do one or two finished paintings if you wish, or you can get many starters as to composition and correct drawing to help you finish them at home.

We will do a lot of sketching. If you intend to paint an actual project after we discussed the elements of perspective and composition, bring your usual painting items.

The classes don't really build on one another, so you won't miss anything critical if you are absent from one class.

Ruth Squitieri
Born and raised in Germany, Ruth moved to the States in her early twenties.  She drew and painted since she was a child and was very encouraged by her parents. Being self-taught, Ruth displays a great interest in art history and trying every medium available. Her love for oils and plein air painting started about 10 years ago.
Ruth has participated in many Plein Air Paintouts all over Florida, and has been an invited guest plein air painter at Epcot theme park in Orlando for 5 years. Ruth has served as judge for several outdoor festivals in the Deland area. She is a regular instructor at the Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach, teaching different mediums, and principles of composition and perspective.

Ruth is versatile in many mediums. When painting plein air, she prefers oils and more recently acrylics. While traveling she takes a small kit and does on-site sketches in pen and ink with watercolor/gouache washes. She’s also adept at calligraphy and embellishing her artwork with goldleaf. Ruth is constantly exploring new mediums, surfaces and tools and thus expanding her painting repertoire. She also publishes a blog showcasing her current paintings and explaining her process and techniques.
In addition she is the Publicist, Website designer and Head of Classes for the Artists Workshop.

Mission

The Artists' Workshop of New Smyrna Beach strives to enrich the community by offering a supportive and vibrant environment which promotes opportunities to learn, create, exhibit and appreciate the arts.
