ARNOLD DESMARAIS
b. 1952
“My challenge is to create paintings which are parables of coastal vistas that allow the viewer to seamlessly pass through the technical skill and further travel to private and personal places of their heart and mind that evoke comforting memories of gentler times.”
Arnold Desmarais was born into a New England family of artists in 1952. As a young child, he was formally introduced to art at the Rhode Island School of Design where he flourished as a prodigy. Later as a young man, he continued with painting and illustration while simultaneously earning his degrees from Bryant University which created a platform from which to launch a global career in the art of design and fashion.
Arnold’s career afforded him the opportunity to combine his love of art with his business skills to not only work with such prestigious clients as Anne Klein, Bill Blass, Erte, Donna Karen, Liz Claiborne, and more but also the opportunity to travel the museums of the world to experience first-hand the work of the great masters. His prestigious client list includes The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre of Paris as well as iconic brands as Faberge; and Disney.
It is in 1990 that Arnold sold his successful commercial business to devote his life to his love of fine art painting. Although he is considered self-taught, he attributes his personal growth to the workshops he has taken with the artists he most admires; Joseph McGurl, Donald Demers, Jim Wilcox and others.
His love of the ocean and antique boats comes from a life time spent by the sea. Born on an island, Arnold has spent most of his life in coastal New England which afforded him the opportunity to hone his skills and created an understanding of the coastal environment where he studies and honors the vessels of by-gone errors in his work.
Arnold’s deep respect and appreciation for the help that he has enjoyed in his early years of his art career by mentors such as Marieluise Hutchinson, he now shares his knowledge by teaching and lecturing to aspiring artists at art institutions, including The Cape Museum of Art, The Cahoon Museum of American Art and the Cape Cod Artist Association for which he created a teaching video and donated the proceeds.
Many of Arnold’s works have been exhibited in museums and national shows which include the American Society of Marine Painters national museum tours, The Mystic Seaport Museum, the Providence Art Club, The Heritage Plantation Museum and the Cahoon Museum of Art in which he has a painting in their permanent collection.
Arnold now lectures on a regular basis at the Museum of Arts and Science, MOAS in Daytona, the largest museum in the Southeast. Several of his lectures and demonstrations can be found on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
Arnold now travels the Eastern Seaboard from his home in Florida to Maine painting the coastal imagery that defines his art.
