RULES ABOUT EXHIBITING AT THE GALLERY ON CANAL
The Artists’ Workshop Gallery displays original art only. No copies or reproductions of artwork will be accepted. Paintings, photography, ceramics, fiber art, and sculptures are welcomed in the gallery.
To enter an exhibit, a Member must send an email to the gallery chairman with the following information - Title, Price, Medium, Size (including frame), and artist’s name. This is needed to determine when an exhibit is filled and to create labels for the art.
In addition to the directory, dates for exhibit entry and pick up can also be found in the monthly newsletter and on the website www.artistsworkshopinc.com. A Constant Contact email is also sent as a reminder.
Maximum size of artwork may not exceed 36” in height or width due to wall space. This allows for as many Members as possible to be able to exhibit in each monthly show. A few oversized pieces are allowed on occasion and must be submitted in advance for the chair’s approval.
A label needs to be placed on the back of the artwork with the same information sent to the chairman. Sculpture and clay artists must supply a small card to go with their work.
Artwork must be securely wired to hang. It must lay flat on a wall. No saw tooth or other hangers can be used as they are not compatible with our hanging system. All artwork must be framed unless it is gallery wrapped (canvas stapled on the back) with all edges painted or covered with wood strips.
Artwork is enhanced by suitable framing in good condition. Simple wood or metal frames less than two inches are recommended. If the artwork is matted, white matting is preferred and required for judged exhibits. Pastel art may be covered with glass, but anything else requiring a covering must use acrylic or Plexiglas. Art is limited by weight. Glass is too heavy for large pieces. Anything weighing more than 30 lbs. cannot be hung on our system.
For each month that you exhibit in the Gallery on Canal you will be asked to host the gallery for three hours either in the morning or afternoon. This is your opportunity to be an ambassador for the Artists' Workshop and is a responsibility for being in the gallery. Upon the sale of your artwork, 20% of the sale is to be donated to the Artists' Workshop to help with gallery expenses and advertising. There is no charge to enter the one month Artists' Choice shows, and all AWI members are invited to display their work.
FEATURED ARTISTS THEMED SHOWS
The Featured Artists Themed shows will hang for two months. This allows for a longer time for the artwork to be seen and greater opportunity for the work to sell. Featured Artists pay $25 to rent a panel (the floor to ceiling panels on one side of the gallery) and may place one large or several small paintings on the panel. This allows you to showcase several of your works together. Your name will be displayed on the panel. These exhibits will receive additional advertising in the newspapers as well as on glossy 5x7 postcards that will include the name of each featured artist along with a photo of one of their paintings. The cards will be distributed at other galleries and businesses.
There will be a $25 fee for the front window panel and the top of the landing during themed shows. These locations are also considered featured artist locations and will be assigned by the gallery chairman. The rest of the gallery will hold single paintings, ceramics and sculptures at a cost of $5.00 each. ALL PAINTINGS IN THE SHOW MUST ADHERE TO THE THEME. If your work sells you can replace it with another at no additional charge.
In order for the gallery chairman to plan the themed shows and prepare the advertising, artists interested in being a Featured Artist are requested to notify the gallery chairman of their desire to exhibit A FULL MONTH IN ADVANCE of the drop off date.
DECEMBER JUDGED GALLERY EXHIBIT RULES
The December show in the Gallery on Canal will be a judged small works show. Two pieces may be entered that are no more than 14" x 14" with the fee of $15.00 each. Artwork must be no more than 2 years old and cannot have previously won an award in any Artists' Workshop judged exhibit. All the rules about gallery exhibiting apply to this show including submission of label information to the gallery chairman and signing up to be a host in the gallery.
ANNUAL MEMBERS’ SHOW RULES
On March 7th, 2020, AWI presents the 62nd Annual Members’ Show at the Studio Gallery. This is a themed gala event, opening with a cocktail reception and followed by the awards presentation. A Prospectus with labels and other important information will be available on our website later this year. Copies will also be available at our monthly general meetings. Notice will be published in the newsletter and on the website.
The entry fee for the Annual Members’ Show is $25.Checks will be accepted made out to Artists’ Workshop, Inc. Bring your entry with completed labels attached to the back of your 2-D pieces. The 3-D pieces must be accompanied with completed labels to be placed beneath or alongside the entry. Your signed Prospectus and signed “Waiver of Liability” are required for entry.
One piece of artwork per person is allowed. Water media requiring covering must use Plexiglas. Pastel work may use glass. Proper framing requires using strong braided wire that is securely attached on the back approximately one third down from the frame top. This enables the artwork to lay flatly against the wall. No sawtooth hangers, fishing line, plastic or other materials will be accepted.
Mats must be white (preferred), off-white, gray or black. Simplicity in framing is critical when judging.
Size limitations apply. Work weighing more than 25 lbs cannot be hung with our setup and will not be accepted. No 2-D artwork can exceed 50” in any direction including the frame. 3-D artwork must fit on a pedestal and be no wider than 18”, with a few exceptions determined by the gallery chairman. Smaller works are encouraged to enable as many members to participate in the show as space allows.
AWI dues must have been paid by December 7, 2019, three months prior to the date of the Members’ Show to enter.
Only original artwork in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing, mixed media, photography or sculpture will be accepted that meet the above requirements and the following rules.
Artwork must be of the artist’s own concept and design. Artwork that has been previously shown in an Annual Members’ Show, has won an award in an AWI judged show, or is over two years old will not be accepted. We rely on members’ integrity to enter work that is independent of instruction by a teacher. Artwork found to be copied from other artists’ work will forfeit any awards.
We reserve the right to remove any entry not in compliance with eligibility rules. No refund will be issued.
“Waiver of Liability” forms must be completed upon entry of artwork. We handle all artwork with a great deal of care but cannot be accountable for loss or damage. You may insure your artwork.
AWI may use images of exhibited artwork on our website and/or in publicity materials giving credit to the artists.
Presentation of awards will take place at the show opening March 7, 2020.
