  • Starts September 7th
  • 6 weeks

All levels, oil or acrylic. You can bring a photo or paint along with Patrick who will answer questions and help with problems. Areas covered will be composition, color mixing, drawing/transferring reference photo, and basic brush techniques.

Materials List

Welcome to “Painting with Patrick”. These painting sessions are open to beginners and also to those that have been painting for some time that would like to go to the next level.

I use oil paints for my demonstration paintings as well as my studio paintings, but feel free to use acrylic paints if you prefer them.

During the first class, I will begin a new painting in front of the class. This will include  a demonstration showing how to begin a painting. Also discussed will be elements that make a painting more pleasing to the eye (composition) , the mixing of colors, drawing (how to transfer your image to the canvas) and basic brush technique. Each additional class over the six-week period will begin with a painting  demonstration where I will take the painting started the first week to the next level. The remainder of the class time will be spent painting, where I will be available to answer questions and help with problems. The subject matter of the paintings I demonstrate vary from month to month but include Florida landscapes, seascapes, island cottages, tropical foliage, nautical settings and still life.

The art students can bring in a photo that they would like to paint, a painting already started, or they can paint the same painting along with the instructor as I complete the painting over the six week period.

Materials List

Why is drawing so hard?

I don’t think it is. Come see how I do it.

I will help you develop your drawing abilities whether you are just starting out or looking to elevate your skills. I will show how to draw faces and figures in their proper proportions and location. We will work from basic line drawing to fully developed works of art. If your interest is something other than drawing people I will work with you on whatever the subject is. Recognizing that each student will come to the class at a different level of experience, the class is open to all artists regardless of their drawing ability.

Composition and Perspective

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (B)

  • Starts (TBD)
  • 6 weeks

Member $110
Non-Member $125

Bring your sketchbook, pencil and reference photos and we’ll discuss the best composition, what to include, what to leave out, and where the perspective lines go. Learn to incorporate realistic-looking people in your landscapes. Information that every artists needs to know!

Materials List

For this class I will give hands-on demos and explanations of the principles of composition, like:
-what to include from your scene/reference photo
-what to edit out or move around, and why
-how to correctly distribute your darks and lights for maximum impact
-how to compose the scene on your canvas/paper
-where to place your elements

Show the ins and outs of perspective and how to incorporate people in your scene, at the correct size!

I will do all demos on projects from you, the students. The more ideas and reference photos you bring, the better. We will also go outside for one or two sessions and explore the perspective and composition on site (daytime classes only).
I illustrate these principles on YOUR projects and on as many of them as possible, so you get a lot of samples and ideas. We will have time to do one or two finished paintings if you wish, or you can get many starters as to composition and correct drawing to help you finish them at home.

We will do a lot of sketching. If you intend to paint an actual project after we discussed the elements of perspective and composition, bring your usual painting items.

The classes don’t really build on one another, so you won’t miss anything critical if you are absent from one class.

You’ll also learn how to prepare your canvas the correct and efficient way, and how to make good decisions on your composition and design of your artwork. The limited palette will be discussed and used throughout.

We will then paint a simple still life and a simple landscape. Then you’ll spend the last 2 weeks on your own painting where I’ll give you individual advice and we will all learn from each others’ ideas, mistakes and successes.
