Class Description
If you are a beginner to art and don’t know where to start, this is the class for you! Have you ever wondered what the difference is between acrylic and oil? Do you have certain limitations regarding your creative space at home, or does your family have allergies to contend with? How about budget and time investment in a particular medium? We will find out all of that and more! We will try our hand at the most common and popular art mediums, and all materials will be supplied by the instructor. We will explore each medium by using the materials in a playful way AND creating some serious artwork, learn about general art techniques and tips, and find out what might suit your needs and desires.
Some notes from the instructor:
- Nothing to bring, except yourself and a bit of talent (but that’s not necessary, we should find it during one of the sessions.) The class is pretty hands on and after each session I will follow up with extensive materials (links, visuals, ideas, etc via email that can serve as your notes).
- If you have any art materials, please bring them on the day I’m introducing that particular medium (or a week before that). I can review with you and see what else you might need, and what might bring you frustration or joy to work with. Please DO NOT buy anything for this class – I will supply everything! But – if you already have some supplies, you’re welcome to bring them so you can try the exercises on your own materials in addition to mine (which might be very different)
Below is the tentative schedule:
- 1/21/26 Intro/Charcoal
- 1/28/26 Pencil
- 2/4/26 Colored Pencil
- 2/11/26 Pastel
- 2/18/26 Pen and Ink
- 2/25/26 Watercolor
- 3/7 or 3/11/26 Watercolor 2
- 3/18/26 Acrylics 1
- 3/25/26 Acrylics 2
- 4/1/26 Oils 1
- 4/8/26 Oils 2
- 4/15/26 Oils 3/end
I will try to include one make-up day after the last class for anybody who missed a session or two. It’s a lot of fun and you can make up any session(s) you might have missed during the course.

Ruth Squitieri
BIO
Ruth Squitieri was born and raised in a small town in Germany, before settling in Florida in her early 20s. She always had art in her life. While her family was very musical, she was the only one who always had a pencil or brush in her hand. After painting a lot in watercolor and acrylics, she discovered oils about 20 years ago. In 2008 she took her first plein air workshop and has been hooked to on-site painting ever since. Ruth currently includes quick pen and ink sketches in her repertoire, especially when traveling. She is now focusing on urban sketching with pen and ink washed over with fun splashes of watercolor.
Ruth loves to share her talent and knowledge and has been doing demos at artist’s groups as well as during paintout/plein air festivals in the Central Florida area for many years. She is a sought-after instructor at the Artists Workshop in New Smyrna Beach, teaching principles of Composition and Perspective along with an intensive immersion into art for beginners, head and figure drawing, and pen and ink sketching.
Statement
Ruth believes that working from life allows you to put the most truthful statement onto paper, and also the most interesting. “The camera doesn’t capture all the light and details in the shadows, but puts everything in focus. That is not how we see the world.” To this point she studies the scene that’s in front of her and puts down what nature presents her with, carefully repositioning certain elements, eliminating others, but always focusing on the quality of light (when painting in oils) or fun details (when doing urban sketching).
