Most of you know me from the Artist Workshop, I am a local artist living in Port Orange and just took over the office of Publicist for AWI. I intend to give you more in-depth information in an easy-going storyline style about what's happening at the studios and in our art community. I should be able to include something of interest to everybody - be it an upcoming workshop at the studios, a social event or fundraiser, some extra photos that couldn't be included in the regular newsletter, or some art tips. I also welcome any guest articles, if you feel so inclined. Please direct any questions or suggestions to me, Ruth Squitieri, at krautgraphics@ gmail.com.
The New Smyrna Beach Paintout is happening very soon! On Monday, Oct 9, til Saturday, Oct 14, over 30 artists from all over the United States will paint our lovely area. Four members of the Artists Workshop will also participate: Cathy Berse, Christophe Cardot, Scott Hiestand, and me, Ruth Squitieri. All of us are very active as instructors at the workshop, and we would love to have you all come out and watch us and the other 26 artists paint!
A paintout is an event run over the course of a week that brings artistic attention to a certain area. Usually the city, a gallery or other organization invites local and national artists to participate in painting the local scenery "en plein air", meaning outside - in front of the actual subject (which is usually a landscape). Paintouts give artists the opportunity to network, socialize and paint with other artists, while the local community can watch them at work. Some artists like to paint in groups, so it's not rare to catch several of them painting the same subject at the same time - very interesting! At the end of each day the artists hang their finished work(s) of the day in the "wet room"/gallery and by the end of the week there are hundreds of great paintings of the local area on the walls. Think 25-30 artists painting 1-2 paintings a day for 5-6 days. That results in 150-300 great pieces of art!
Most often there are galas, receptions, live auctions, sunset and/or night painting, quick draws and free demonstrations included in the week. It's fun for the whole community, and a great opportunity to watch lots of artists, talk with them, and maybe even learn a bit. The event ends with the big gala at the end with prizes given to the best artwork(s) and/or an opportunity to buy a piece for yourself. It's great fun to view the wet room and all its pieces displaying YOUR community in various colors, scenery, themes and compositions.
So what is going on at our local paintout?
The Paintout organizer is Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille on 300 Boatyard St in New Smyrna Beach (first traffic light after going east over the North Causeway). The profit of art sales are split between the Artists Workshop, Marine Dicovery Center and environmental causes.
The artists will start painting around town Monday morning, Oct 9, with Nocturne Painting on Flagler Ave. around sunset at 7pm. Come on out and join the fun while getting dinner and a drink at the local restaurants. Wednesday, Oct 11, there will be a live auction at Outriggers, while the artists are all congregating there at 4:30pm to start painting the glorious colors of the coming sunset. Live auction begins at 7pm, and some of the pieces included are the ones that are still wet from hours or even minutes earlier! On Thursday, Oct 12, the Advanced Middle School class will be painting in the Canaveral National Seashore Park at and around the Visitor Center under the friendly guidance of Cathy Berse (10am - 1pm). Friday, Oct 13 will be a private party you can buy in with a $300 Patron buy-in (includes 100% art credit!). The wet room/gallery to view all paintings is open every day from 11am to 10pm on the grassy area leading into Outriggers in a festival tent. You can buy art during that time at any day. Saturday, Oct 14, is the last day with a Patron Cocktail hour 6-7pm, then a gala at New Smyrna Marina from 7-11pm. Live music by The Oakhill Drifters will add to the festive atmosphere.
The best day to view the gallery will be of course on Friday, as it will include the largest amount of paintings. Remember, it's free and right in town! You can even chat with the artists as they come in and add to the walls. Please support the participating AWI members and all the other artists with your presence and interest. It's really very cool to see and chat with the artists, and especially kids and grandkids would love to get this opportunity to see ART LIVE and IN ACTION of places they recognize!
